💬 Messaging & Chat

Who Can Send You Messages?

myteeb uses a match-based messaging system. This means only people you have matched with (mutual likes) can send you messages — helping keep your inbox relevant and spam-free.

You can control this further in Settings → Privacy:

  • "Everyone I match with" — the default. Any mutual match can message you.
  • "Matches only (mutual likes required)" — same as default in practice, but more explicit.

How to Send a Message

  1. 1
    Go to your Matches

Open the Matches page (heart icon in the nav) and click on any match in the Matches tab.

  2. 2
    Or open Messages

Go to Messages (chat icon in the nav) to see all your active conversations in one list.

  3. 3
    Type your message

Click on a match to open the chat, type in the message box at the bottom, and press Enter or click Send.

💡 Tip: First messages are the hardest! Try referencing something from their profile — a shared interest, their bio, or their city. Personalised openers get far more replies than "Hey".

The Messages Page

The Messages page (myteeb.com/messages) shows all your active conversations sorted by most recent message. Each conversation row shows:

  • The match's profile photo and name.
  • A preview of the last message sent.
  • A blue dot indicator for unread messages.
  • The time of the last message.

Read Receipts — "Seen" Indicator

Read receipts tell you when the other person has read your message. When they open the chat, your message will show a small "Seen" label beneath it.

Plan Availability

Plan Read Receipts
Free Not available
✦ Silver ✅ Included
⭐ Gold ✅ Included
Read receipts are also subject to the admin's global "Read receipts enabled" setting. If the site admin has turned read receipts off globally, they won't appear for anyone regardless of plan.

Message Notifications

When you receive a new message, you'll see:

  • A red badge on the Messages icon in the sidebar and mobile nav bar.
  • A notification in your Notifications page.
  • The conversation moves to the top of your Messages list.

The unread badge count updates automatically every 15 seconds while you're on the site — no need to refresh.

Unmatching

You can unmatch anyone at any time. When you unmatch:

  • The chat is locked — neither person can send new messages.
  • The connection is removed from both users' Matches.
  • Message history is preserved on your side in a locked/greyed-out state.
  • The other person's profile disappears from your Discover feed.

To unmatch someone, open the chat and look for the unmatch option in the chat menu (top right). Or go to Matches → Liked tab and unlike the person.

💡 Tip: If someone is being inappropriate, use the Report function rather than just unmatching — this helps keep the community safe.

Frequently Asked Questions

Someone I matched with can't receive my messages — why?
This can happen if the other person has blocked you, deactivated their account, or was banned from the platform. The chat will show a locked/greyed-out state in these cases.
Can I delete a message I sent?
Currently myteeb does not support deleting individual messages. Once sent, a message is visible to both parties in the conversation.
Why don't I see a "Seen" indicator on my messages?
Read receipts require a Silver or Gold plan. If you're on the Free plan, the Seen indicator won't appear. Upgrade to see read receipts →
Is there a message limit?
No — once matched, you can send unlimited messages to your matches on any plan.
Can I message someone before matching?
No. myteeb requires a mutual match before messaging. This keeps conversations meaningful and protects everyone from unwanted contact.
